<授業の目的>
1. Students will develop their understanding and knowledge of observations and findings with reference to the relationship between language, communication and culture from a variety of multidisciplinary perspectives.
2. Students will become more sensitive to their language use and intercultural communication differences and to provide them with the knowledge and skills to interact successfully with people from cultures other than their own.

<授業の方法>
本科目は、原則的に英語を媒介語とし、毎週Onlineでの講義とグループディスカッションを含むライブ型の授業に加えて、MoodleやCNSで課題を提示し、翌週月曜日の17:00までに提出いただく形で補完しながら進めていきます。英語でのコミュニケーションができる言語運用能力が必要とされます。This course will be delivered online by means of interactive lectures with student-led discussions in English. The weekly interactive lectures will introduce the key topics for discussion and provide the context for theoretical models and key terms of study. These sessions will establish the broad principles, concepts and definitions as the basis for further discussions and presentations. The students will be expected to submit their weekly Learning Journals on Moodle system in principle. The language proficiency to communicate in English is required.
<受講に際して・学生へのメッセージ>
1. In order to attend online classes, students need to prepare the equipment including PC/Tablet, headset or earphones with microphone, webcam and stable internet connection.
2.Students are encouraged to engage with self-monitoring and critical thinking in preparation for the assessment.
3. Students are expected to participate actively in class activities, to keep a written reflection papers or reports and to carry out independent reading and research in addition to classroom-based learning. Attendance is absolutely critical to meeting the overall objective of the course.
4. We can all learn from each other and even teach each other, through our own experiences and reflections about culture in various communication contexts. Therefore, the discussions can be a great leaning experience, if everyone in the class gets into them. Respect for every student's experience and opinion will be expected.

Reading materials will be given in advance. The purpose of the readings is to give us a theoretical as well as narrative basis to understand different dynamics and issues within Language and Communication across Cultures. Class discussion will build from the reading, so it is assumed that the reading has been completed before the W2 class.
After the class, you will be also expected to review the content of the W2 class, write a Learning Journal and submit it by 17:00, the day before the W3 class.

As groups only have 90 minutes to prepare for the mini-group presentation in W7, you should discuss within the group which presentation topic you would like to choose and how you can gather information, in advance.
授業内容Groups will choose one of the presentation topics related to the course contents and prepare for a PPT mini-group presentation on the topic.

Groups are expected to be ready to give a mini-Group Presentation in class. You will assess all the mini-group presentations including your own group's on the evaluation sheet. After the class, you will be expected to write a Learning Journal and submit it together with the group presentation evaluation sheet before the assigned date.

海外における教育経験があり、異文化適応や文化を越えての言語とコミュニケーションの関わりについて研究している教員が担当します。
The course will be taught by an instructor with experience of teaching overseas and research into intercultural communication and the relationship between language and communication across cultures.

【Action plans in response to requests for improvement to the course from the previous year】

1. Themes are based on problems and barriers in intercultural communication. Quizzes and more interactive activities will be included to increase participation in groups.

2. In order to ensure that discussions progress smoothly, I would like to provide students with a list of useful vocabulary and expressions for group discussions and encourage them to make use of it.

3.In order to participate in the online class, everyone has a webcam and either a headset or microphone, so that I will be able to encourage them to show their faces for smoother and better communication every week.
