<授業の目的>
In this course, students will develop their communication skills through a variety of pair and group activities. Emphasis will be placed on developing speaking fluency, important communication structures, and communication strategies. In addition, critical thinking skills, reading skills, and vocabulary will be improved.

The goal is for students to improve their critical thinking skills and their communication ability, overcome their fears and inhibitions about speaking English and learn how to express themselves effectively, naturally and with confidence on a variety of topics.

<授業の方法>
Until such time as it is deemed safe to return to the classroom, this course will be conducted online, using Moodle and MS Teams or Zoom. Assignments, written work, and instruction for research and preparation will be on Moodle, and discussions and presentations will be on MS Teams or Zoom. Once classroom teaching resumes, appropriate safety measures will be in place, such as social distancing and air ventilation. During semester one, we will work through the first six units in the textbook – named ‘Cycle 1, and in semester two we will complete the next six units – named Cycle 2. Students will be expected to give presentations during both semesters on the topics covered. These will take the form of oral presentations, PowerPoint presentations, and depending on circumstances, poster presentation.

<受講に際して・学生へのメッセージ>
This class will be taught in English, and students will be expected to use English in the class. Students should bring a laptop computer/ipad/smartphone for sessions when we return to the classroom if directed to by the teacher. While classes are online, students will be expected to use Moodle and MS Teams or ZOOM as directed by the teacher.

<授業計画の概要>
Week 1 – Go over the objectives of the course again. Begin Unit 7 – Online Advertising: Making Our Lives Better. Students will work through the activities in the textbook – Reading, Vocabulary, Research and Writing. Teachers will decide to omit any sections that they feel are not relevant. Students will be set up for the discussion session on this unit, which will take place the following week. Teachers may provide additional material for this if they see fit.
Week 2 – Unit 7 – Online Advertising: Making Our Lives Better. Discussion class. Students will be expected to express opinions and display critical thinking during this session.
Week 3 – Unit 8 – Winning at Any Cost. Repeat the process from week 2.
Week 4 – Unit 8 – Winning at Any Cost. Discussion class. Students will be expected to express opinions and display critical thinking during this session.
Week 5 – Unit 9 – Do You Want to Live Forever? Repeat the process from week 2.
Week 6 – Unit 9 – Do You Want to Live Forever? Discussion class. Students will be expected to express opinions and display critical thinking during this session.
Week 7 – Group PowerPoint presentations on one of the first three topics covered. Again group sizes can be decided by the teacher based on class numbers.
Week 8 – Unit 10 – I Lost my Job to a Machine! Repeat the process from week 2.
Week 9 – Unit 10 - I Lost my Job to a Machine! Discussion class. Students will be expected to express opinions and display critical thinking during this session.
Week 10 – Unit 11 – Treatment of Animals. Repeat the process from week 2.
Week 11 – Unit 11 – Treatment of Animals. Discussion class. Students will be expected to express opinions and display critical thinking during this session.
Week 12 – Unit 12 – Who Owns the News? Repeat the process from week 2.
Week 13 – Unit 12 – Who Owns the News? Discussion class. Students will be expected to express opinions and display critical thinking during this session.
Week 14 – Presentations. Students should give a presentation on one of the units covered in the second part of the semester. Presentations should be around 5 - 7minutes long, and delivered without PowerPoint or any other similar software. This will be an individual presentation.
Teachers should encourage questions from the rest of the class, and give feedback to those presenting. Therefore, split this into two sessions, doing half the class this week, and half next week.
Week 15 – Final Presentations Part 2.
