<授業の目的>
In this course, students will develop their communication skills through a variety of pair and group activities. Emphasis will be placed on developing speaking fluency, important communication structures, and communication strategies. In addition, critical thinking skills, reading skills, and vocabulary will be improved.

The goal is for students to improve their critical thinking skills and their communication ability, overcome their fears and inhibitions about speaking English and learn how to express themselves effectively, naturally and with confidence on a variety of topics.

<授業の方法>
Until such time as it is deemed safe to return to the classroom, this course will be conducted online, using Moodle and MS Teams or Zoom. Assignments, written work, and instruction for research and preparation will be on Moodle, and discussions and presentations will be on MS Teams or Zoom. Once classroom teaching resumes, appropriate safety measures will be in place, such as social distancing and air ventilation. During semester one, we will work through the first six units in the textbook – named ‘Cycle 1, and in semester two we will complete the next six units – named Cycle 2. Students will be expected to give presentations during both semesters on the topics covered. These will take the form of oral presentations, PowerPoint presentations, and depending on circumstances, poster presentation.

<受講に際して・学生へのメッセージ>
This class will be taught in English, and students will be expected to use English in the class. Students should bring a laptop computer/ipad/smartphone for sessions when we return to the classroom if directed to by the teacher. While classes are online, students will be expected to use Moodle and MS Teams or ZOOM as directed by the teacher.

<授業計画の概要>
Week 1 – Introduction to the course and the textbook, and any suitable ice-breaker activities.
Week 2 – Unit 1 – The Effects of Advertising. Students will work through the activities in the textbook – Reading, Vocabulary, Research and Writing. Teachers will decide to omit any sections that they feel are not relevant. Students will be set up for the discussion session on this unit, which will take place the following week. Teachers may provide additional material for this if they see fit.
Week 3 – Unit 1 – The Effects of Advertising. Discussion class. Students will be expected to express opinions and display critical thinking during this session.
Week 4 – Unit 2 – Extreme Sports. Repeat the process from week 2.
Week 5 – Unit 2 – Extreme Sports. Discussion class. Students will be expected to express opinions and display critical thinking during this session.
Week 6 – Unit 3 – Our Aging Population. Repeat the process from week 2.
Week 7 – Unit 3 – Our Aging Population. Discussion class. Students will be expected to express opinions and display critical thinking during this session.
Week 8 – Group presentations on the first three topic covered. Students will give a group presentation on one of the three topics covered so far. Teachers will decide the size of each group based on student numbers.
Week 9 – Unit 4 – Robots in the Home. Repeat the process from week 2.
Week 10 – Unit 4 – Robots in the Home. Discussion class. Students will be expected to express opinions and display critical thinking during this session.
Week 11 – Unit 5 – Animals: Our Research Partners. Repeat the process from week 2.
Week 12 – Unit 5 – Animals: Our Research Partners. Discussion class. Students will be expected to express opinions and display critical thinking during this session.
Week 13 – Unit 6 – The Online Information Debate. Repeat the process from week 2.
Week 14 – Unit 6 – The Online Information Debate. Discussion class. Students will be expected to express opinions and display critical thinking during this session.
Week 15 – Final Presentations. Students should submit a group poster presentation based on one of the topics covered in the second half of the semester.
