<授業の目的>
This course is designed to improve students abilities to make speeches and presentations in English. This includes overcoming many of the mental barriers that come with standing in front of a group of people. This also includes examining the cultural differences between speeches given in Japan and those given in Western countries. The course will be modelled after the modern form of presentations made popular by "TED Talks".

<授業の方法>
NOTE: At the current time, this course is to be conducted in the classroom. If there is a change in university policy regarding the Corona pandemic, we may be required to do the course online. The instructor will provide the necessary information about this based on the news of the time. As mentioned above in the "Purpose of the Class", this course is based on the form and style of TEDTALKS, the current model of presentation and speech-giving in the Western world.
Students will: prepare and make presentations and speeches. PLEASE NOTE: THIS SPEECH CLASS FOCUSES ON THE DELIVERY AND THE CONTENT OF SPEECHES AND THEREFORE WILL NOT INVOLVE COMPUTER-BASED VISUALS. IN OTHER WORDS, STUDENT WILL NOT SPEND TIME PREPARING POWERPOINT IMAGES. THIS IS NOT A COMPUTER GRAPHICS CLASS. This is about learning the mechanics of presentations and the content therein.

<授業計画の概要>
1タイトルIntroduction to English Speech

Before class be prepared to interact with the other students in order to accomplish the given in-class activities. After class review and study the given information on class policies in order to prepare for the quiz.
授業内容Handout on "Find Someone Who" ice breaker activity to get to know the other students, students work in pairs to answer the given T or F questions regarding class policies, Picasso quote regarding asking questions and then students ask the instructor questions
2タイトルA Case for Communicative Writing

Before class study for the quiz on class policies. After class, students should review the importance of knowing the differences between why people send emails versus why people give speeches.
授業内容In pairs students will read the story and then brainstorm all of the benefits of sending emails, review the above with the whole class and then ask students, "Why have speeches with so many benefits of sending email?"
3タイトルFirst Speech: About You

Review the benefits of giving a speech rather than sending an email. After class reflect on how you felt while standing in front of the class and giving your first speech.
授業内容Students will be chosen at random to stand up in the front of the class and talk about themselves for two to three minutes. Students in the "audience" will then ask questions.
4タイトルLoud and Clear

Review the importance of being prepared when giving a speech in order to reduce nervousness. After class prepare for next speech on "Something you like to do"
授業内容Pairs, one partner on one side of the room and one partner on the other. Students on one side will be given a question and the partner on the other side will find the answer and tell partner. Students will learn that they have to speak loudly, clearly and repetitively if they want to be understood.
5タイトルSecond Speech: Something I Like to Do

Before class students will practice giving their speech. After class students will reflect on how they felt during the speech and what could have done to make it better.
授業内容Students will be chosen at random to stand up in the front of the class and talk about something they like to do for three to five minutes. Students in the "audience" will then ask questions.
6タイトルIntro to TED Talks

Before class think about how a Japanese speech might be different from a Western speech. After class review the points mentioned about TED Talks.
授業内容Teacher will review the students' speeches from last week, watch video by Garr Reynolds on "Why Storytelling Matters" in TED Talk form. Students will then discuss in groups how the speaker's presentation is different from the average Japanese speech.
7タイトルTED Talk Part II

Students will review the points discussed regarding the video about TED Talks. After class students will think about preparing for their next speech about "Telling Friends a Story".
授業内容Students ask each other for at least 8 different points discussed last week about TED Talks. Review the points in detail and how these points will be incorporated into the students' next speech.
8タイトルThird Speech: Telling a friend a Story

Review the points important in giving a TED Talk--especially the point about being NATURAL. After class, students will reflect on how they felt during the speech and what could have done to make it better and how "natural" the speaker was.
授業内容Students will be chosen at random to stand up in the front of the class and tell a story as though they were telling it to a friend, for three to five minutes. Students in the "audience" will then ask questions.
9タイトルStarting with a Bang not a Whimper

Students will review their thoughts on being natural during their third speech. After class, students will prepare for their fourth speech: starting with a bang.
授業内容Watch a YouTube video of some of the world speech champions and how they start their speeches, discuss the above, review, give students handout and explain various ways to begin a speech with a bang.

Prepare and practice speech that starts with a bang, getting the audience's attention. After class, students will reflect on how they felt during the speech and what could have done to make it better and how "natural" the speaker was.
授業内容Students will be chosen at random to stand up in the front of the class and talk about their hometown with a focus on getting the students' attention at the beginning. The speech will be for three to five minutes. Students in the "audience" will then ask questions.
11タイトルMidterm Test

Students will review all notes and handouts in order to study for the midterm test. After the test, students will think about the best ways to ask questions in a speech.
授業内容Students will write the mid-term test and then if time we will discuss various problems and solutions when it comes to asking questions during a speech.
12タイトルAsking Questions

Students will think about the problems associated with asking questions during a speech and also the benefits. After class, students will prepare for speech #5: Asking Questions
授業内容In pairs students read handout "The Art of Asking Questions." Instructor will review the important points of the handout. Students will be given a picture and asked to make questions related to the given picture.
13タイトルFifth Speech: Asking Questions: Show and Tell

Students will prepare and practice their speech that focuses on asking the audience questions. After class, students will reflect on how they felt during the speech and what went well with the questions and what didn't.
授業内容Students will be chosen at random to stand up in the front of the class and talk about some object they brought to class and ask the audience questions about it. The speech will be for three to five minutes. Students in the "audience" will then ask questions.
14タイトルEnglish Speech Course Review

Students will go through all of their notes and handouts to review the important points of the course. After class students will begin preparing and practicing their final speech.
授業内容Students will brainstorm with each other all of the important points we studied so far during the course. Instructor will review these points and then do "Back to Board" activity as a review.

Students will prepare for their final speech, incorporating all of the important mechanics discussed throughout the course. After the class students can feel the joy of never having to do another speech in front of this class again.
