<授業の目的>
The aim of this class is to prepare students for the examinations required for studying English abroad (TOEFL) and IELTS), the purpose of which is to evaluate the ability of non-native speakers of English to use an understand standard English as it is spoken, written and heard at college and university level. The class is intended primarily for students who plan to continue their education at colleges and universities abroad. These tests comprise four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. English for Studying Abroad I will cover sections Listening and Speaking, and sections Reading and Writing will be covered by Studying Abroad II. The same textbook will be used in both semesters.

<授業の方法>
A textbook will be used to teach both test-taking strategies and language skills by means of various exercises. The course will prepare the students for the examinations by means of a series of practice tests held at intervals throughout the course and a final examination. The textbook will be supplemented with vocabulary exercises and other exercises to cater for students′needs.<BR>*Points regarding the language skills:<BR>For reading, students will be required to read passages and answer questions about the content, the authors′intent and ideas inferred from the passages. They will also have to paraphrase, complete tables and make summaries.<BR>For listening, students will be required to listen to short conversations and talks and to answer questions about contentand intent, as well as speakers′attitude and meaning.<BR>For speaking, students will be required to talk about questions relating to personal experiences and to express ideas and opinions.<BR>For writing, students will be required to express an opinion about a specified general topic and to answer questions about the main points of passages.

Students should use class time well by participating positively and enthusiastically in the lesson. They should prepare and review lessons thoroughly. The content to the examination is based on authentic material from university textbooks and other sources. Students should be aware that the course will be chalanging and the final examination difficult.
