Listening precedes speaking just as in native language acquisition: by this method, confidence will increase prior to producing spoken text. The coursebook is informed by corpus linguistics, so the grammar and vocabulary encountered is both high-frequency and realistic language. The students will listen to a variety of authentic and semi-authentic texts, of several genres, focussing on a different listening sub-skill in each class. In the second half of the course, students will be ready to produce their own texts, initially through dialogue and conversation and finally by means of a presentation. The students’ own texts will be the basis of analysis for error location and improvement. The coursebook has scope for further self-study.

<受講に際して・学生へのメッセージ>
You will be exposed to English as it is naturally spoken by American users. The English you produce will also be natural, making you sound more accomplished and less ‘like a book’. I hope this will be motivating for you. You will be able to interact and respond effectively in transactional and interactional situations of a variety of types, from listening to a weather report to arguing your point of view.
