There are three main components to this class: reading, writing and vocabulary skills. Reading will be developed by drawing on a wide range of material, from newspapers; books; magazines; the Internet. Writing will have a narrower, more purposeful, focus, almost exclusively concerned with writing an academic report, as well as regular e-mail exchanges with the tutor. In writing, we will build from sentence-level to essay-level structures and discourse. Vocabulary skills involve guessing meaning from context, word-class and word-parts, as well as acquiring some useful techniques for recording and remembering vocabulary. Each class will involve the three components, and will build gradually and logically from simpler to more complex, and from shorter to longer texts. Finally, there will be an underlying approach of encouraging study skills development and learner independence.

<受講に際して・学生へのメッセージ>
By not following a coursebook, we will be free to react to your real needs for Reading and Writing in English, as well as being able to explore authentic and up-to-date texts from a variety of sources. In addition, we will be communicating regularly by e-mail, which will be an area of improvement over the course. Your own errors will be used as a basis for analysis and development, using the most up-to-date methodology derived from systemic functional linguistics. This class will be cutting edge, relevant and motivating.
