＜授業の目的＞
The aim of this class is to prepare students for the TOEFL examination, the purpose of which is to evaluate the ability of non-native speakers of English to use and understand standard English as it is spoken, written and heard at college and university level. The class is intended primarily for students who plan to continue their education at colleges or universities abroad. The TOEFL test comprises four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.<BR>Two sections will be dealt with in the first semester (TOEFL I), and the remaining two in the second semester (TOEFL II). The same textbook will be used in both semesters.
Full and active participation in this TOEFL course will allow students to demonstrate the extent to which they can communicate effectively and successfully in the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing; skills which are necessary for a college or university environment in an English-speaking country. Students will be prepared both academically and strategically to succeed in the TOEFL examination.
＜授業の方法＞
A textbook will be used to teach both test-taking strategies and language skills by means of various exercises. The course will prepare the students for the TOEFL examination by means of a series of practice tests held at intervals throughout the course and a final examination. The textbook will be supplemented with vocabulary and listening exercises to cater for students’ needs.<BR>*Points regarding the four language skills:<BR>For reading, students will be required to read a passage and answer questions about the content, the author's intent and ideas inferred from the passage. They will also have to paraphrase, complete tables or make summaries.<BR>For listening, students will be required to listen to short conversations or talks and to answer questions about content and intent as well as the speakers' attitude and meaning.<BR>For speaking, students will be required to talk about questions relating to personal experiences and to express ideas and opinions.<BR>For writing, students will be required to express an opinion about a specified general topic and to answer a question about the main points of a passage.

The content of the TOEFL examination is based on authentic material from university textbooks. Students should be aware that the course will be challenging and the final examination difficult.
